Permanent monitoring gives government and residents control over noise

Posted on 8 October, 2024

Our meters will be moved from the Floriade to event locations in the Municipality of Almere (NL). Permanent noise monitoring gives government and residents control over noise.

How?

Permanent monitoring of noise pollution can lead to a reduction in the most important forms of noise pollution. It enables competent authorities to get a grip on noise pollution, while it contributes to citizens' feeling of being heard and their involvement contributes to a healthier noise environment.

Why?

In the Netherlands, government agencies receive more than 500,000 noise complaints every year. A significant number of these are related to current nuisance caused by music events, catering, industry, construction, night noise, tourists, sports, loading/unloading and animal sounds.

An effective reduction of more than 30% of this nuisance is possible under the following conditions:

  • Awareness of the perpetrator: It is essential that the perpetrator is immediately aware of the nuisance that is being caused.
  • More than 90% of the perpetrators, such as catering visitors, music event organizations, industrial companies, motorcyclists, sports facilities and entertainment venues, are prepared to take measures as soon as they are aware of their impact.
  • Transparency and continuous insight: All parties involved must have transparency and continuous insight, not only into trends but also into the direct effect of measures taken. Objective insight into the nuisance contributes to a new sense of standards.
  • Encouraging self-regulation: Active stimulation and facilitation of self-regulation, for example by making noise transparent and open to discussion, promoting participation and including it in local regulations. The new Environmental Act offers opportunities for this approach.

In addition to self-regulation, permanent monitoring speeds up your complaint handling processes. After all, you always have measurement data available. Advanced functions in the measurement platform, such as identification of noise sources, location and the degree of exceedance or nuisance at homes, support the analysis and enable you to directly address noise generators, such as industry, about the nuisance they cause. And all this affordable and with a very low cost of ownership.
