Munisense and Socotec Geotechnics monitor real-time groundwater levels along Amsterdam’s canals. This large-scale, dynamic monitoring network provides continuous insight into the balance between canal water and groundwater. This is crucial during quay restoration, where disturbances can pose risks to historic foundations.
Utilizing approximately 280 monitoring wells—supplemented at locations where new work begins—the network is flexibly deployed in areas with the highest geotechnical risk. Digital pressure sensors continuously measure water pressure, while data is made immediately available to Waternet and the municipality via a wireless network.
Thanks to atmospheric pressure compensation and validation against field measurements, the data is reliable and ready for immediate use. Automatic alerts are triggered as soon as groundwater levels fall outside safety margins, enabling contractors to take immediate corrective action and prevent damage.
