We are happy to explain why we chose LTE-M (Long Term Evolution for Machines).
This wireless technology for the Internet of Things (IoT) uses the 4G network. LTE-M is designed for devices that regularly need to transmit small amounts of data and require long battery life.
Some important advantages that tipped the balance towards LTE-M
Power Saving Mode (PSM). This allows devices to go into sleep mode when they are idle. This way the internal battery lasts much longer. Ideal for our IoT water level meters, because they connect to our portal at predictable times. The rest of the time they don't have to send any data.
Extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX). This allows our equipment to receive any OTA updates and your configuration changes or troubleshooting commands from the portal.
And further?
LTE-M can handle higher data speeds of up to 1 Mbp/s. In addition, LTE-M offers advantages such as less delay in data transfer (lower latency) and better positioning accuracy.
LTE-M is ideal for massive IoT, such as our large measurement networks with sensors that all send their data to the same portal. Partly due to the minimal power consumption, it is very suitable for use with our water level meters, which therefore run on their batteries for a long time.
LTE-M with global SIMs
Our choice of Deutsche Telekom global SIMs guarantees future-proof superior coverage in the Netherlands; the three Dutch operators support LTE-M and roaming is without preference. The result is that the measuring equipment always chooses the network with the very best coverage at the location in question.
